About Us
Animals are our life and we are passionate about their welfare and care, and we take great pride in doing this as a family together, in fact we are enrolling the 3rd generation to join us in looking after and playing with our wonderful dogs (ok so she’s our granddaughter but she loves her very important role with us).
All our dogs are loved and cared for and we strive to make everything tickety boo in readiness for welcoming a new litter of puppies into our home and that includes important DNA health testing, hip scoring and BVA eye tests where appropriate. Whilst health testing is very important so is temperament – ALL our dogs, without exception, are friendly, loving, happy dogs.
Our Story
Nearly 40 years ago Adrian and I met – both from rural and farming backgrounds. After a couple of years we decided to buy our first home together – we moved in and quickly realised something was missing – pets! We got Bramble, our first Black Labrador. Our lives together always have, and always will have dogs (amongst many, many others!) in it!
We welcomed our son Tom and daughter Freya into our lives and as a family began to grow – more pets! Then farm animals of our own! Before Tom and Freya arrived we’d already had our first litter of puppies!
Fast forward 20 years – we bought Whinney Brow, 60 acres of glorious Cumbrian countryside – bliss! More room! More dogs! We were able to dedicate ourselves to our true passion – breeding health tested, healthy happy, confident dogs and commit to their wellbeing and entrust chosen people to look after them for the rest of their natural lives.

Jenny Riley, Founder
From being a small girl I helped my dad on the farm and particularly at lambing time – kicking off my school shoes and donning my wellies as soon as I got home from school. The best times were when dad’s collie dogs had puppies – I took my role very seriously, helping wean them and playing with them – I just thought it was fun – little did I know dad was “using” me to socialise them and help them to be confident happy puppies! I learned lot in those formative years – not just puppies but lambs and calves too – were they warm enough? Had they eaten well? Looking for signs of illness or just good wellbeing.
As a teenager, trying to “decide” on a career path I was told “do typing love, you’ll always have work” – so grudgingly I embarked on a career in administration – I loved the “people” side of it but always felt I wasn’t in the right “job”. I had been abit of a hobby breeder for a number of years before we moved to Whinney Brow but after being here a year I was made redundant – Bingo! This was the push I needed to do what I really wanted to do! I started building my reputation as an ethical, responsible, committed breeder. I’ve never worked as hard in my whole life but I’ve also never been happier!! Yes there’s blood, sweat and tears (with every litter!) but the pride I have and the warm glow I have when I see excited families with their new puppies – that I made happen – it’s a feeling I can’t beat!
I never take for granted how lucky we are – living in this beautiful place, doing what we love to do – come and be part of the next chapter with me!
A little guilty pleasure of mine is Robbie Williams!! I’ve seen him in concert many times. I can be found often cleaning out or bathing dogs with my ear buds in “singing” away – I say “singing” because my husband Adrian has been known to ask who’s strangling the cat!! Rude!
